Description
Repetition becomes a pathway to somewhere unknown on 'Genog', the second Smote release for Rocket Recordings. Led by Daniel Foggin, the project draws from drone, traditional folk, and the exploratory spirit of psychedelic rock, building five long-form pieces that gather momentum through hypnotic cycles and gradual transformation. Rooted in the earthy and pastoral yet steeped in mystery, the album feels like a journey through imagined landscapes where ancient ritual, fantasy, and hallucination begin to merge.
The title track establishes the record's dark, repetitive pull, while "Hlaf" and "Fenhop" open into more spectral and pastoral territory. Across the extended "Lof" and "Banhus", layers of percussion, drones, and folk-rooted instrumentation accumulate with increasingly overwhelming force. What began as Foggin's solitary recording project here expands into something larger and more physical, capturing the power of Smote as a full band. Earthy, ritualistic, and richly cinematic, 'Genog' turns repetition into transcendence, guiding the listener through a world that feels both ancient and entirely imagined.
