East London punks Flats adopted a manifesto of writing only fast, short, and heavy songs, quickly attracting attention from influential figures. Klaxons’ Jamie Reynolds co-produced their first EP, and their shows drew the likes of J Mascis, J Spaceman, and Kevin Shields. Their single 'Never Again' was the first release on SweatShop Records, the band’s own imprint under One Little Indian. In June 2011, Flats were invited to support Morrissey on tour.

'Better Living' marked a progression from their early material, drawing from a wide range of heavy guitar music. The album nodded to influences like Black Sabbath, Napalm Death, Blue Cheer, Crass, Heresy, Saint Vitus, Darkthrone, Anthrax, and Discharge. The LP featured twelve new tracks, including the single "Country / Moonwalk" and a cover of Hellhammer’s "Crucifixion".
