Description

Three tracks are enough for Howl to establish a remarkably heavy identity on their self-titled debut. Released in 2009 through Relapse Records, the Providence quartet build their sound around massive riffs, harsh growled vocals, and a thick rhythmic groove that sits between sludge, doom, and stoner metal. The production keeps the guitars rough and physical rather than overly polished, giving the EP a dense, almost live feel while still leaving room for sudden tempo changes and more intricate rhythmic details.

"Oma" introduces the band’s slow, crushing weight, while "And The Gnawing..." stretches further into doom-laden tension and abrasive riffing. "Kings That Steal" closes the record with the same heavy swing and oppressive atmosphere, reinforcing the sense that Howl were already thinking beyond straightforward genre boundaries. Issued as a one-sided LP, 'Howl' works as a compact but convincing first statement from a band built around riffs, weight, and menace.
