Description
Released in 2000, ‘Contemporary Movement’ finds Duster at their most stark and enigmatic, drifting deeper into the void they began tracing on their cult debut ‘Stratosphere’. Emerging at the dawn of the MP3 era, the record feels like a muffled transmission from another world—its lo-fi production, Cold War–tinged reverb, and tape hiss combining into a sound both distant and hauntingly intimate. Built from slow, deliberate rhythms, submerged guitars, and hushed vocals, it plays less like a traditional rock album and more like a monument to isolation, a Brutalist structure echoing in suburban sprawl.
At just under forty minutes, ‘Contemporary Movement’ distills Duster’s approach into a series of grey-toned soundscapes that blur the line between slowcore, space rock, and drone. Tracks like “Get The Dutch” and “Me And The Birds” hover in suspended animation, while “Travelogue” and “Topical Solution” embody the band’s uncanny ability to make desolation strangely comforting. Long overlooked, the album has since become a cornerstone of lo-fi slowcore, revered for conjuring profound emotion through restraint. This numbered 25th Anniversary Edition is pressed on 180g vinyl and comes complete with a lyric sheet and poster, cementing ‘Contemporary Movement’ as one of Duster’s most enduring works.
