Rats, guilt and a wavering sense of reality shape '1922 (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)', Mike Patton’s score for Netflix’s adaptation of Stephen King’s novella. Set in rural Nebraska, the story follows Wilfred James as he confesses to killing his wife, Arlette, with help from their son. His account grows increasingly unstable as rats plague the farm and he becomes convinced Arlette’s ghost is seeking revenge. The music traces this psychological unravelling, shaping the film’s atmosphere without simply illustrating its plot.

Built around somber, funereal orchestration, the score draws much of its force from strings, then unsettles that stately foundation with bursts of dissonance and eerie, skittering percussion. These shifts give the music a distinctly Pattonian edge: tense, strange and unpredictable, moving between mournful restraint and sudden unease. The shifting arrangements keep the listener inside Wilfred’s increasingly distorted perspective. The album brings together music heard in the film with expanded pieces omitted from the final cut, allowing the score to unfold beyond the demands of individual scenes. Patton’s work on '1922' continues his screen-composing career, which also includes scores for 'The Place Beyond the Pines' and 'Crank: High Voltage'.
