Description
When 'Khanate' arrived in 2001, it sounded less like an album and more like the echo of a disaster already underway. The debut from Khanate was described as having “the ambiance of a plane crash site,” five movements of unbearable tension where silence, distortion, and terror intertwined. It wasn’t about warning of doom to come, but about inhabiting the wreckage—dragging the listener into a world where the worst has already happened, and keeps happening.
Formed by Stephen O’Malley (Sunn O)))), Alan Dubin (ex-Old), James Plotkin, and Tim Wyskida, Khanate quickly redefined heaviness through suffocating patience and grotesque detail. "Pieces of Quiet" and "Skin Coat" smother with corrosive repetition, while "Torching Koroviev" feels like a ritual in collapse. "Under Rotting Sky" stretches dread into near-infinite space, and "No Joy" closes with pulverizing finality, stripping away any sense of release. Minimalist yet overwhelming, 'Khanate' was a groundbreaking statement—an orchestrated nightmare that laid the foundation for one of the most uncompromising legacies in extreme music.
