Description
Emerging during a period of reinvention, 'Black Antlers' captures Coil in one of their most dynamic late-era forms. Initially issued in 2004 as an “album-in-progress,” it was finalized by Peter Christopherson and Danny Hyde in 2006 following Jhonn Balance’s passing. Rooted in a renewed emphasis on rhythm, beats, and live performance energy, the album merges evocative lyricism, dense electronics, and surreal atmospheres into a vivid, beat-driven dreamstate.
With a lineup including Thighpaulsandra, percussionist Tom Edwards, and wind specialist Mike York, 'Black Antlers' blends Ableton-era spontaneity with Coil’s signature mysticism. The album traverses eerie lullabies, warped jazz experiments, and ritualistic pulses—highlighted in tracks like the hypnotic “The Gimp (Sometimes),” the reimagined “Teenage Lightning (10th Birthday Version),” and the celestial “Sex With Sun Ra.” Its final form acts as a document of transformation and preservation—a vibrant and haunting testament to Coil’s creative continuum and posthumous completion.
