Description
A heavier, more collaborative side of thisquietarmy emerges on 'Hex Mountains', where Eric Quach expands his guitar-based drone language into something closer to a full-band experience. Recorded through sessions in the Basque countryside and Canada, the album brings drummer Scotty Rooney, bassist Dorian Williamson, and vocalists Émilie Bresson and Jeanne Peluard into Quach’s dense layers of loops and effects. The added rhythm section gives the music greater physical weight, while distant shrieks, noise, and blurred guitar textures preserve the project’s characteristic sense of isolation and scale.
"From Darkness" slowly rises from suspended guitar tones into pounding drums and increasingly massive riffs, establishing the album’s movement between drone and post-rock. The sprawling "Wraithslayers" pushes further into suffocating repetition and spectral vocals, while "Digital Witchcraft" retreats toward eerie abstraction before repeatedly breaking into heavier passages. "Spirits in Oblivion" closes the record by bringing the rhythmic force back to the foreground, building toward one of its most cathartic peaks. Across four extended pieces, 'Hex Mountains' turns thisquietarmy’s ambient drone foundations into something darker and more muscular, balancing hypnotic repetition with doom-weighted riffs and sweeping post-rock dynamics.
