Description
Sepultura entered a new era with 'Against', the band's eighth studio album and the first to feature vocalist Derrick Green following the departure of Max Cavalera. Released in 1998, the record marked a bold reinvention, embracing a heavier emphasis on groove, hardcore, industrial textures, and tribal rhythms while retaining the relentless intensity that had defined the group's earlier work. Rather than revisiting past successes, Sepultura forged a fresh identity, delivering a confrontational and rhythm-driven collection that reflected both resilience and artistic evolution.
Across fourteen tracks, 'Against' combined crushing riffs with percussive experimentation and socially conscious themes, balancing aggression with atmospheric passages and unconventional song structures. Highlights such as "Choke", "Rumors", and "Floaters In Mud" showcased the band's renewed energy, while "Hatred Aside" featured guest contributions from Jason Newsted, adding another dimension to the album's diverse sound. Although initially divisive among longtime fans, the record has since been recognised as an important chapter in Sepultura's history, demonstrating their refusal to stand still and their willingness to push beyond the boundaries of traditional metal.
