Description
Across 'Nine', Russian Circles turn their instrumental interplay into a set of tense, vividly sculpted journeys. The Chicago trio’s guitar, bass, drums and occasional electronics move from brooding repetition to sudden, punishing force, balancing the open-ended sweep of post-rock with a distinctly metallic weight. “Borehole” establishes that tension through a returning guitar figure that circles toward a bleak, heavy finish; “Empath” compresses bass-driven riffs, rapid attacks and a crushing breakdown into a short burst. The contrast makes the album feel purposeful and dramatic without relying on vocals or lyrics.
Longer pieces give the record room to expand. “Eluvial” layers delayed guitar patterns over a shifting groove before breaking into a storm, while “E2” and “Meridian” thread synth pulses, intricate guitar lines and propulsive drums into steadily advancing forms. “Arletta” briefly pares the sound back to a solitary nylon-string guitar, sharpening the impact of “Seventh Seal,” whose direct, forceful riffing brings the album to an emphatic close. Recorded with Kurt Ballou, 'Nine' carries clarity and physical heft across its seven tracks, drawing together atmosphere, repetition and controlled escalation. It continues the band’s refinement of heavy instrumental rock, with every arrangement contributing to a coherent, cinematic album-length arc.
