Description
Unfolding like a shadow cast from the already unsettling 'Avow', Portal's 'Hagbulbia' ventured even deeper into the Australian band's nightmarish sonic universe. Released as a companion piece to its sister album, this seventh full-length found Portal stripping away many of the conventions associated with extreme metal and embracing a more spectral, abstract, and disorienting approach. Rather than relying on sheer aggression, the record immersed listeners in a suffocating atmosphere of dread, built from distorted textures, unsettling electronics, fractured rhythms, and ghostly vocal fragments. The result was a work that felt less like a collection of songs and more like an encounter with an unknowable paranormal presence.
Across its five expansive compositions, Portal explored the outer reaches of their already singular sound. "Of Straw & Cloth" and "Weptune" drifted through dense layers of industrial noise and haunted ambience, while the sprawling "Hexodeus" closed the album with an overwhelming descent into chaos and unease. Though connected to the death metal foundations that shaped the band's legacy, 'Hagbulbia' pushed further into experimental territory, prioritizing atmosphere, tension, and psychological horror over traditional structures. Abnormal, surreal, and relentlessly unsettling, it remains one of Portal's most challenging and otherworldly releases.
