Description
Shaped by the bleak expanses of the North Yorkshire moors, 'The Hollow' finds Keeley Forsyth transforming isolation, memory and vulnerability into stark, elemental music. Its title refers to an abandoned mining shaft, evoking the ways in which buried histories continue to haunt the present. Working with producer Ross Downes, Forsyth combines sparse electronics, sacred music, dark ambient textures and post-classical arrangements, leaving space for her voice to move between fragility, tension and cathartic force.
Inspired partly by Mihály Vig’s score for The Turin Horse, the album recasts everyday experience as a mythical struggle for survival and renewal. "A Shift" draws from Mal Finch’s miners’ strike protest song "We Are Women, We Are Strong", reshaping its collective defiance into a reflection on creative endurance. Elsewhere, Colin Stetson contributes to "Turning", while Matthew Bourne appears on the closing "Creature", adding further depth to the album’s shadowy instrumentation. Austere yet emotionally powerful, 'The Hollow' captures Keeley Forsyth at her most exposed and assured, balancing raw expression with carefully sculpted sound.
