Description
Cut live in Nashville over six days, 'Dixie Blur' finds Jonathan Wilson turning from the hazy Laurel Canyon psychedelia of earlier work toward the Southern country and bluegrass sounds of his youth. With longtime friend Pat Sansone producing, Wilson recorded alongside seasoned Nashville players, including bassist Dennis Crouch, pedal steel guitarist Russ Pahl, fiddle master Mark O’Connor and multi-instrumentalist Jim Hoke. The songs benefit from musicians sharing a room: fiddle, pedal steel, bass and guitar shape warm, unforced arrangements, while Wilson’s songwriting keeps the record rooted in melody and reflection.
Memories of growing up in North Carolina run through songs such as "69 Corvette," while "Heaven Making Love" revives a composition first written for 'Rare Birds' and "Korean Tea" revisits a song from Wilson’s 1990s group Muscadine. Country and bluegrass touches sit alongside the relaxed, sunlit atmosphere of Laurel Canyon, giving the album a loose country-rock character without making it a strict genre exercise. The live-in-the-room approach leaves space for the players to respond to one another, lending the songs an easy warmth and sense of shared time. 'Dixie Blur' is an intimate, roots-minded turn in Wilson’s catalogue, balancing Nashville tradition with his own Californian haze.
