Description
A meeting between two distinctive composers, JG Thirlwell and Simon Steensland turns 'Oscillospira' into a dark, chamber-sized prog journey, where tightly arranged passages carry a strong cinematic pull. The pair began developing the collaboration through work connected to Stockholm’s Great Learning Orchestra, building from Thirlwell’s commission into a full album. Across eight extended pieces, piano, strings, oboe, bass clarinet and shadowy choral voices move around Morgan Ågren’s vivid drumming, shifting between measured tension and sudden, forceful surges. The music feels carefully composed yet restless, balancing orchestral detail with the weight and momentum of progressive rock.
Rather than following conventional song forms, 'Oscillospira' unfolds through recurring motifs, dramatic changes in texture and gradual build-ups. "Heron" and "Night Shift" reveal the album’s patient, suspenseful side, while "Catholic Deceit" and "Redbug" bring a heavier, more tumultuous edge. Instrumental for much of its length, the record still has a theatrical presence: its wordless voices and unusual timbres suggest a film score for an unsettling world. The result draws on chamber music, avant-garde composition and progressive rock without settling into any one of them, making the album feel both meticulously constructed and intriguingly unpredictable.
