Description

Returning to the raw methods that first shaped his work, 'Axis' found Helm embracing instinct, texture, and physicality through a gripping exploration of industrial noise and abstract electronics. Originally conceived as the soundtrack to a dance performance before evolving into a standalone album, the record retained a powerful sense of movement, transforming fractured rhythms, metallic resonance, and low-frequency pulses into an immersive sonic environment. Built from primitive equipment, contact microphones, and improvised sound sources, it captured an artist reconnecting with the elemental force of noise.

Across seven expansive compositions, Helm layered grinding drones, granular distortion, and eerie atmospheres with contributions from Lucy Railton, Mark Morgan, Alex Tucker, and the late John Hannon, enriching the album's dense and tactile sound world. Mixed by Randall Dunn and mastered by Stefan Betke (Pole), 'Axis' balanced harsh experimentation with remarkable spatial depth, allowing its abrasive textures to breathe and evolve with hypnotic intensity. Both visceral and cinematic, the album stood as one of Luke Younger's most compelling statements, blurring the boundaries between industrial music, experimental electronics, and contemporary sound art.
