Description
Conceived as a focused return to form, ‘Anches En Maat’ marked a pivotal moment in Grails’ long-running evolution. Arriving more than five years after ‘Chalice Hymnal’, the album was the band’s first full-length recorded entirely together in the studio since 2008’s ‘Doomsdayer’s Holiday’. After a decade defined by sprawling double LPs and extended post-production, this release embraced the discipline of a single-album runtime, prioritising live interaction and collective momentum. Recorded in Atlanta with founding members Alex Hall and Emil Amos alongside Jesse Bates, Ilyas Ahmed, and AE Paterra, the sessions captured a rare sense of immediacy and shared presence.
Despite its tighter scope, ‘Anches En Maat’ lost none of the band’s trademark density or ambition. The album unfolded as an uncanny collage of influences: warped echoes of 1980s softcore and daytime television scores, cosmic minimalism, melancholic electronic pulses, aching Western motifs, and sweeping, soul-inflected string arrangements. These elements intertwined into a deeply cinematic experience, rich with atmosphere and emotional weight. Rather than a simplification, the record felt like a recalibration — a refinement of Grails’ internal logic that yielded one of the most confident and defining statements of their two-decade career.
