Description
Atmospheric yet crushingly heavy, Pelican's 'Ephemeral' showcased the Chicago instrumental quartet's ability to balance towering riffs with cinematic depth. Released through Southern Lord, this concise but powerful EP found the band exploring the space between post-metal grandeur and sludge-fueled intensity. Recorded by Chris Common, the three-track release distilled many of the qualities that made Pelican such a defining force in modern heavy music: massive guitar tones, dynamic compositions, and an instinctive understanding of tension and release. Rather than relying on vocals, the band allowed melody, texture, and sheer volume to carry the emotional weight of the record.
The side-long opener "Embedding the Moss" unfolded with a patient, epic quality, gradually building from brooding passages into towering walls of sound. The title track delivered some of the EP's most immediate moments, driven by galloping rhythms and razor-sharp riffs that highlighted Pelican's mastery of instrumental metal songwriting. Closing the record, "Geometry of Murder" paid tribute to drone metal pioneer Dylan Carlson of Earth, who also contributed to the track, adding an extra layer of sludge and gravitas. Compact yet remarkably expansive, 'Ephemeral' stood as a compelling chapter in Pelican's catalog, bridging post-metal atmosphere with crushing heaviness.
