Luis Pestana 'Rosa Pano'
Portuguese musician Luis Pestana debut album 'Rosa Pano', a record treading a thin line between folklore and computer music, between what was and what will be. A group of vocalists, zither, various woodwind instruments, hurdy-gurdy and other traditional sounds are positioned alongside digital synthesizers and warped samples as Pestana explores where the past and future meet.
There is obviously a lot of tension that this relationship creates, and it's reflected in the album's many emotional and sonic peaks. Gliding melodies, resonant drones, ever-ascending choirs, crushing synthesizers, church bells or inaudible fragments of conversations - all these sounds form the collage that is 'Rosa Pano'. Pestana says that 'Rosa Pano' is his own folklore, one belonging to this moment in time, inspired by his mother's lullabies. It's filled to the brim with dirt, blood and memories, yet still sprinkled with moments of hope, solace and peace.
