Cold Gawd 'I'll Drown On This Earth'
Southern California shoegaze band Cold Gawd returns to Dais Records with 'I'll Drown On This Earth', their most intense and refined album to date. Opening with the defiant scream of “Gorgeous,” the album embodies what frontman Matthew Wainwright describes as a "go for it" mentality—raw and unfiltered. Though the songs were written in 2022, they weren’t recorded until 2024, allowing time to perfect the blend of distortion, hooks, and atmospheric haze. Recorded at Paradise Recorders in Anaheim with Colin Knight, the album's standout tracks like “Portland” and “Malibu Beach House” encapsulate Cold Gawd's signature shoegaze sound, mixing walls of noise with emotional, dreamlike melodies and introspective lyrics. Wainwright’s surreal and melancholic words float through the album’s dense reverb, delving into themes of love, loss, and existential questioning.
Much like their 2022 release 'God Get Me The Fuck Out Of Here', Cold Gawd continues to expand their sonic palette. The ethereal “Tappan” and the downtempo, slow-grind of “Nudism” highlight the band’s willingness to experiment while staying rooted in shoegaze. Drawing from influences as varied as Loveless, Drake, post-hardcore, and Beach House, 'I'll Drown On This Earth' deepens Cold Gawd’s exploration of dreamy, heavy, and emotional music. The album channels a mix of riffs, reverb, and raw emotion, creating a cathartic listening experience that’s both intimate and powerful.
