Description
'Head' marked The Jesus Lizard’s explosive full-length debut in 1990 and remains a benchmark for their ferocious, unrelenting sound. Following the raw energy of their 'Pure' EP, this record cemented the band’s reputation as a fearless and volatile force in American noise rock. Produced with laser-sharp intensity and later remastered by Steve Albini and Bob Weston, 'Head' distills the band’s volatile chemistry into a set of songs that hit like a surgical strike.
The album is driven by Duane Denison’s caustic, off-kilter guitar work, David Wm. Sims’ bruising basslines, and Mac McNeilly’s galloping drum assault. Over top of it all, David Yow delivers vocals that sound torn from some subterranean chamber—equal parts deranged preacher and contorted storyteller. 'Head' is both muscular and chaotic, favoring sharp precision over sludge but retaining a primal, unfiltered energy. It's the sound of a band both refined and rabid, fine-tuned yet feral. With tracks that feel like being dragged through a glass-strewn alley at high speed, the album launched The Jesus Lizard’s Touch and Go era with focused intensity and no apologies.
