Coil 'Moon's Milk (In Four Phases)'
First compiled as a double CD in 2002, 'Moon’s Milk (In Four Phases)' is a suite of four EPs that Coil released seasonally in 1998 through their Eskaton imprint. The lineup for these sessions included John Balance, Peter "Sleazy" Christopherson, Drew McDowall, and William Breeze. Primarily recorded at their home studio in Chiswick, London, just before relocating to Weston-super-Mare, this collection is considered a pivotal work in Coil's discography, though it has never been officially reissued or pressed on vinyl. Over time, its strange and regal beauty has only grown more profound.
Arranged to honor the equinoxes and solstices, 'Moon's Milk (In Four Phases)' captures Coil at a crossroads, leaning into improvisation and sound design. Each phase evokes a different mood, from the vocal drones and eerie organ of "Moon's Milk or Under an Unquiet Skull" to the pensive ballads of Autumn Equinox and the ceremonial swells of Winter Solstice. The final phase, Winter Solstice, features haunting pieces like "A White Rainbow" and "North," which stir with layered choral vocals and shivering rhythms. The Dais box set includes rare bonus material, showcasing the vast, confounding alchemy of Coil's sonic and bodily experimentation, moving beyond post-industrial into the avant-garde.
