Despair and velocity are inseparable on 'Lament', the 2019 debut from Totaled. Formed in 2017, the band channel black metal fury through the physical attack of hardcore, using tremolo-picked guitars, blast beats, D-beat rhythms, and heavily distorted bass to create a sound that feels both violent and suffocating. The production keeps everything dense and abrasive, while the longer songs leave enough space for bleak melodic lines and slower, more ominous passages to surface beneath the chaos.

The brief "Deplete" acts as an immediate ignition point before "As Below", "Eclipsed", and "Transience" establish the album’s central balance between blackened speed and hardcore propulsion. "Hypnosis" stretches that tension into a more expansive form, while "Desolate" introduces slower, heavier movement without breaking the record’s momentum. After the short instrumental "Ominous", "Bereft" closes the album with its longest piece, pulling D-beat drive, bleak melody, and crushing repetition into one final descent. Across eight tracks, 'Lament' remains relentlessly hostile, but its strongest moments come from the way Totaled shape that aggression into something mournful and atmospheric.
