Description
From out of the dark, the crackle of feedback birdsong signals a return to a singular sonic terrain shaped by Rafael Toral. Arriving a year and a half after his electric guitar statement, the album documents a decisive shift from abstraction toward composition, as Toral reimagines a set of classic jazz standards through his own expanded listening lens. What might initially seem improbable becomes deeply intuitive, with familiar melodies stretched, slowed, and reframed until harmony itself feels altered. These songs are not treated as repertoire, but as living material, allowed to breathe outside the expected logic of interpretation.
Decades of practice converge here, as Rafael Toral combines his early use of guitar as a generator of texture with later explorations in self-built electronics and silence. Guitar, sine waves, feedback, bass tones, and custom devices form a proxy orchestra, elongating time so that chords emerge as events in themselves. The music retains a quiet devotion to tradition even as it transforms it, evoking liturgical stillness and meditative drift. Guest appearances from clarinet, saxophone, flügelhorn, and flute briefly anchor the record in jazz history before dissolving back into altered space. ‘Traveling Light’ becomes a nexus where past and future meet, offering a contemplative re-encounter with song, memory, and sound.
