Description
Nothing push their expansive, emotionally charged sound further on 'a short history of decay', a record that magnifies both the weight and vulnerability at the core of their music. Formed in Philadelphia by Domenic “Nicky” Palermo, Nothing have long reshaped shoegaze into something heavier and more visceral, replacing dreamy detachment with bruised honesty and towering distortion. On this album, dense walls of fuzz, industrial textures, and reverberating guitars surround Palermo’s introspective songwriting, capturing both existential dread and fragile clarity. Co-written and produced with Whirr guitarist Nicholas Bassett and further shaped through mixing by Sonny Diperri, the record presents one of the band’s most focused and fully realized statements.
Across nine tracks, 'a short history of decay' balances crushing intensity with moments of stark beauty. “Cannibal World” and “Toothless Coal” surge with mechanized industrial-gaze force, while “Purple Strings” introduces sweeping orchestration with harpist Mary Lattimore. Elsewhere, “The Rain Don’t Care” drifts through melancholic calm and “Nerve Scales” blends atmospheric depth with rhythmic precision. With contributions from Doyle Martin, Bobb Bruno, Zachary Jones, and Cam Smith, Nothing deliver a record that feels both reflective and forward-moving, confronting time, regret, and personal transformation.
