Description
By the time of 'Telling It Like It Is', Marching Church had evolved from Elias Bender Rønnenfelt’s loosely defined solo outlet into a fully functioning ensemble. Rather than repeating the abrupt stylistic shifts of earlier releases, the band channel post-punk, soul, jazz, dub, and experimental rock into more tightly constructed songs, with the studio itself becoming part of the arrangement. Horns, strings, melodica, percussion, and layered vocals surround Rønnenfelt’s dramatic delivery, giving the album a theatrical character without sacrificing its underlying tension.
What holds the record together is its constant movement between restraint and excess. Rhythms can feel hypnotic and almost krautrock-like before brass, guitar, or vocals suddenly destabilize the structure, while quieter passages retain an uneasy sense of drama. "Lion's Den" turns that tension into a dark, slow-burning groove, "Inner City Pigeon" moves between meditative space and raw eruptions, and "2016" pushes the band toward a more flamboyant rock attack. By the closing "Calenture", the record’s various strands feel unusually cohesive. 'Telling It Like It Is' remains unpredictable, but its experimentation is shaped into the most focused and deliberate version of Marching Church’s sound.
