Luca Yupanqui 'Sounds of the Unborn'
Luca Yupanqui was not yet born when she recorded her debut album. 'Sounds of the Unborn' captures life in its cosmic state—pre-mind, pre-influence, and pre-human. It is the first album created by a person still in the womb, offering a message from a different realm. Using biosonic MIDI technology, her in utero movements were translated into sound with the help of her parents, Psychic Ills bassist Elizabeth Hart and Lee "Scratch" Perry collaborator Iván Diaz Mathé.
During hour-long meditation sessions, vibrations from Elizabeth’s stomach were transcribed into Iván’s synthesizers, shaping the album with minimal interference. In 2020, Elizabeth and Iván mixed the recordings while Luca Yupanqui, now an infant, listened. Her awareness was striking—she seemed to recognize her own sounds, as if reliving the experience, bringing the project full circle.
