Groove and brute force take priority over speed on 'II', the 2016 second full-length from Like Rats. Featuring members of Weekend Nachos, the Chicago band move well beyond powerviolence here, drawing heavily from old-school death metal while retaining the blunt physicality of hardcore. Thick, mid-paced riffs, cavernous vocals, D-beat bursts, and a distinctly primitive swing give the record its character, with clear echoes of Celtic Frost and Obituary running through its thirty-three minutes. Rather than chasing technicality, the album relies on repetition, weight, and immediate rhythmic impact.

That balance becomes especially clear on "From Beyond", "Gates", and "Dissociate", where galloping death-metal riffs repeatedly collapse into huge, mosh-ready passages. "Primordial" and "Immortal Coil" introduce faster sections without disrupting the album’s predominantly mid-tempo crush, while "Grief Incarnate" closes the record by stretching its heaviness into one of the longest and most oppressive tracks. 'II' feels deliberately stripped down: old-school death metal filtered through musicians who understand hardcore’s sense of physical momentum.
