Description
Reimagining one of Britain's most iconic protest songs, Lankum transform The Specials' classic 'Ghost Town' into a haunting and deeply atmospheric interpretation. Originally commissioned for Oona Doherty's dance production 'Specky Clark', the piece begins in an indistinct haze before gradually revealing the familiar melody, unfolding into a hypnotic and emotionally charged meditation on urban decay, economic hardship, and working-class struggle. Rather than simply covering the original, Lankum reconstruct it through their own singular sonic language, creating something both recognisable and entirely new.
Recorded with an adventurous spirit, the quartet embraced synthesisers, drum machines, and unsettling electronic textures alongside their trademark folk sensibilities, allowing the arrangement to evolve into an unexpected techno-infused finale. The result is both eerie and exhilarating, expanding the boundaries of Lankum's sound while preserving the melancholic power that has become their hallmark. Released as a standalone 12" featuring an elaborate etched B-side, 'Ghost Town' stands as a striking reinterpretation of a timeless song whose themes remain as relevant today as ever.
