Description
Dean Hurley’s 'Anthology Resource Vol. II: Philosophy of Beyond' extends his experimental sound work into an ethereal, unsettled realm. The twelve pieces draw in part on music he created for Eddie Alcazar’s 2018 film 'Perfect' and material developed during a residency for the Art Gallery of New South Wales’ Masters of Modern Sound. Using comb-filtering, tape loops and field recordings, Hurley shapes these sources into a cohesive suite that moves between atmospheric score and sound design. The album considers the possibility of consciousness beyond physical life, tracing an imagined passage into the unknown and back.
“Edge of the Known” and “The Curved Arrow of Time” establish a sense of movement through unfamiliar space, while “Far Boundaries” opens toward a more expansive, celestial mood. Elsewhere, the field recordings in “Somewhere in Time” briefly bring the listener back to earth, set against the album’s swirling electronic textures, ominous drones and dissonant tones. Hurley’s careful layering turns a limited palette into a vivid and often disorienting sound world, shifting from suspense and unease to moments of clarity and wonder. Closing with the expansive “Birth”, 'Philosophy of Beyond' leaves the journey unresolved, suspended between the familiar and what may lie beyond it.
