Description
'Mule' turns one of the darkest periods of Orville Peck’s life into a chronological country song cycle about collapse, recovery, and learning how to inhabit himself again. Rather than stripping the music down to match its confessional subject matter, Peck and producer Jay Joyce surround these stories with classic country arrangements, bluegrass harmonies, rockabilly movement, and widescreen Americana. Emmylou Harris, Noah Cyrus, and Allison Russell introduce the record together on "Prologue (Eulogy Of A Man Turned Mule)", establishing the communal, almost hymnal quality that runs beneath its deeply personal narrative.
Heartbreak and isolation gradually give way to addiction, rehab, and the uneasy work of rebuilding. "Rehab Blues" approaches some of that history with characteristic theatricality and humour, while "Cowboy Heart" examines the gap between Peck’s private self and the performer he created. Brighter moments such as "Already Gone" and "Too Little, Too Late" bring rockabilly and pop instincts into the mix without breaking the album’s country foundations. By the closing title track, the mule itself becomes an image for that dual existence: stubborn, hybrid, wounded, but still moving forward.
