Reframing the ideas of ‘Biophilia’ through mutation rather than revision, ‘Bastards’ presented an alternate lifeform growing out of the original album’s core. Conceived as a curated collection rather than a comprehensive remix archive, the release gathered selections from an eight-part remix series issued in 2012 and remastered by Mandy Parnell. For Björk, the aim was not to showcase the most technically impressive reinterpretations, but those that functioned strongest together as a single body of work. The result was a record that preserved the character of ‘Biophilia’ while pushing its rhythmic and textural possibilities into more volatile territory.

Across its 13 tracks, ‘Bastards’ brought together a striking cast of collaborators chosen by Björk, including Current Value, Death Grips, Hudson Mohawke, Alva Noto, Matthew Herbert, Omar Souleyman, These New Puritans, and others. Choirs, organs, and elemental motifs were recontextualised through industrial pressure, fractured electronics, club dynamics, and abrasive beat structures. Rather than smoothing the material for accessibility, the album embraced friction, granting the songs “legs to dance on” while pulling them somewhere darker and more physical. ‘Bastards’ stood not as a companion piece, but as a parallel ecosystem — one that revealed how elastic ‘Biophilia’ truly was when subjected to radical transformation.
