Description
Six years after 'The Missing', Vaura returned with 'Sables', leaving much of the post-metal weight of its earlier records behind for brooding new wave, post-punk and dark, synth-led art rock. The Brooklyn quartet—Josh Strawn, Kevin Hufnagel, Toby Driver and Charlie Schmid—builds a tense, meditative sound from interlocking guitars, bass, drums and electronics. Across eight concise tracks, shadowy melodies and measured rhythms create an atmosphere that feels both grand and unsettled, while the band’s progressive instincts keep the songs shifting beneath the surface.
Mixed and co-produced by Peter Walsh, whose credits include Scott Walker and Peter Gabriel, 'Sables' brings unusual clarity to Vaura’s intricate arrangements. Its songs dwell on endings and extinction without turning toward bombast: synth lines glow through the gloom, guitars move between sharp edges and sustained passages, and the rhythm section holds a steady, hypnotic pulse. “Espionage” opens with an assertive new-wave drive, while “Zwischen” and “Basilisk (The Infinite Corpse)” stretch into more exploratory territory. The title track gathers the album’s somber mood into a measured closing statement. Refined and contemplative, 'Sables' finds Vaura reshaping its dark experimental roots into a focused, atmospheric record with a distinct 1980s art-rock sensibility.
