Description
Monolithic, hypnotic, and steeped in ancient imagery, 'Ishtar Gate' sees Stones of Babylon expanding their instrumental sound into a darker and more immersive journey through Mesopotamian mythology. Released in 2022 through Raging Planet, the album fuses massive stoner and doom riffs with psychedelic textures and Middle Eastern-inspired melodies, creating a sense of ritual and mystery throughout. With Alexandre Mendes joining on guitar, the trio deepen their sound without losing the weight and repetition that defined their earlier work.
Across six long-form compositions, Stones of Babylon move between crushing heaviness and more spacious, meditative passages. "Gilgamesh (...and Enkidu's Demise)" opens with ominous chanting before erupting into a huge doom riff, while "Anunnaki" and "Pazuzu" push further into darker, slower territory. "The Gate of Ishtar" leans more heavily into psychedelia, and "The Fall of Ur" raises the pace with a stronger sense of urgency. Closing track "Tigris & Euphrates" flows from ambient water sounds into towering riffs, bringing the album’s journey to a suitably expansive end.
