Description
'Paper Skin' captures Ritual at the point where their hardcore roots began opening into something more atmospheric and emotionally exposed. Released in 2011 through Reflections Records, the album moves away from the band’s earlier riff-heavy approach, favouring layered guitars, contrast, and mood over constant blunt-force impact. The aggression remains, but it is reshaped through cleaner textures, fractured interludes, and a more intimate lyrical tone, giving the record a darker and more reflective character. Contemporary reviews repeatedly noted how far the band had moved from straightforward hardcore, highlighting the importance of atmosphere, unusual guitar work, and even touches of noise, shoegaze, and drone.
Rather than relying on one fixed attack, 'Paper Skin' keeps changing shape. "White Caskets" stands out for its layered guitar work and carefully built harmonies, while "Absolute Devotion" delivers one of the album’s most direct bursts of hardcore energy. "This Shell Has Got a Soul Again" takes an unexpected detour into a dark, almost bluesy stomp, and "Distant Glance" drifts toward noise, shoegaze, and drone before folding back into the album’s broader tension. The result is still unmistakably hardcore, but more spacious, personal, and exploratory than before.
