Captured entirely in Niger, Mdou Moctar’s 'Niger EP Vol. 1' opens an intimate window into the band’s earliest environments, tracing the raw spirit that shaped their electrifying desert sound. The release gathers a mix of field recordings, rehearsal takes, impromptu house concerts, and wedding performances from 2017–2020—moments where music is loud, communal, and unfiltered. At its center is the previously unreleased 13-minute epic “Imouhar”, a hypnotic fusion of drum machine pulse and searing electric guitar, showing Moctar at his most exploratory. The EP also includes stripped-back or reimagined versions of songs from 'Afrique Victime', 'Afelan', and 'Akounak Tedalat Taha Tazoughai', as well as a drum machine take on “Chismiten” that reconnects the track to Moctar’s early cassette-era experiments.

Compiled as a continuation of the band’s mixtape series, 'Niger EP Vol. 1' reflects the DIY distribution culture of West Africa, where music often travels through Bluetooth shares and phone recordings passed between strangers on long bus rides. Producer and bassist Mikey Coltun describes the EP as a document of roots—capturing the band in informal spaces where the energy is immediate, joyful, and deeply connected to Nigerien community life.
