Description
‘Night CRIÙ’ marks a powerful return to song form for Hilary Woods, following the instrumental worlds of 'Feral Hymns' and 'Acts of Light'. Centering her voice with striking intimacy, she crafts seven pieces built from layered harmonies, lyrical fragments, and subtle acoustic and electronic textures. Each song forms an intimate ceremony, unearthing dormant selves, forgotten agency, and nocturnal emotional terrain. Despite the album’s minimal palette, its atmosphere expands with Woods’ characteristic depth, carried into new territory through writing for brass band and children’s choir. These elements illuminate themes of embodiment, memory, and integration, shaping music that feels both fragile and resolute.
Recorded between Ireland, the UK, Latvia, and the US from 2023 to 2025, ‘Night CRIÙ’ draws on early Italian and Czech cinema, indigenous language revival, childhood parades, early music, and the visceral immediacy of dance. Mixed by Dean Hurley and featuring contributions from Hannah Fallon, Gabriel Ferrandini, The Hangleton brass band, and Ajo Gonsenica, the record seeks to reclaim what has been lost—mourning innocence while uncovering strength. Through its luminous vocals and shadowed textures, Hilary Woods delivers an album that brings the unconscious toward the light, offering a quietly defiant and deeply human vision.
