Description
‘Aurora’ marks Lathe of Heaven’s boldest evolution yet, unfolding like a collection of interconnected short stories steeped in post-punk intensity and literary depth. Drawing from mid-80s British and Finnish influences while weaving in shades of underground pop and new wave, the band balances raw punk urgency with melodic textures inspired by The Cure, Musta Paraati, and A Flock of Seagulls. Recorded with Ben Greenberg and mastered by Brad Boatright, the album channels urgency and atmosphere in equal measure.
Science fiction themes shape the record’s narrative core, pulling from the works of Ursula K. Le Guin and Octavia Butler to explore identity, loss, anti-colonialism, and resistance. “Aurora” imagines devotion in a nuclear-scarred wasteland, while “Exodus” reinterprets the Ship of Theseus paradox through consciousness and selfhood. “Portrait of a Scorched-Earth” offers one of the album’s most direct reckonings, confronting modern warfare and displacement with stark honesty. By blending the political, the personal, and the cosmic, ‘Aurora’ captures Lathe of Heaven at their most ambitious—a post-punk statement as unsettling as it is beautiful.
