Description
'Catharsis' is the debut LP from Institute, recorded in just four days with Ben Greenberg at Brooklyn’s Gary’s Electric after weeks of home demoing in Austin. Released in 2015, the album distills anarcho-punk urgency with a jagged post-punk sensibility, brimming with tension, abrasion, and raw immediacy. Themes of morality, sexuality, and religion intertwine across its ten tracks, delivered with both defiance and disquiet.
From the stark drive of “Cheerlessness” to the anthemic punch of “Cheaptime Morals,” Institute balance sharp hooks with abrasive textures. “Christian Right,” featuring Andrew Savage of Parquet Courts, stretches into looser territory, hinting at the band’s willingness to experiment while keeping their punk core intact. 'Catharsis' captures a young band grasping at transcendence through noise and confrontation, carving out astral space where anger, doubt, and liberation collide.
