Description
Alison Chesley uses the cello as a full orchestra on 'Atomic', drawing out bowed drones, plucked patterns and distorted tones that shift from fragile to forceful. Recording as Helen Money, she strips her arrangements back to their essentials, then layers the instrument with electronics, modular synth and, on “Coppe,” harp. Across eleven instrumentals, the music moves between suspended ambient passages and sudden surges of rhythm and distortion, giving the album a searching ebb and flow. With little between the listener and the instrument, each shift from stillness to distortion lands with greater force.
The album’s minimalist structures grew from a period of transition for Chesley and her family, and from her reflection on Lucretius’s idea that all matter is interconnected. That idea gives 'Atomic' a quiet emotional core without turning the pieces into a fixed narrative. “Midnight” and “Understory” drift through vaporous layers, while “Nemesis” and “Coil” push into harsher, more physical territory. “Coppe” introduces harp, and modular synthesizer textures deepen the cello’s range. Helen Money lets tenderness and intensity coexist, tracing how openness and connection can help us face personal upheaval and a fragile world.
