Description
Unyielding in both sound and intent, ‘Torso’ marked the point where Grief’s vision reached its most extreme and inflexible form. Originally released in 1998, the album pushed further away from the death-doom traces of ‘Come to Grief’, refining the band’s sludge-doom approach into something colder, slower, and more confrontational. Every element felt designed to repel comfort or accessibility, from the deliberately abrasive artwork to the merciless pacing of the music itself. Opening with the instrumental crawl of "I Hate Lucy", the record functioned as a warning rather than an invitation, establishing a tone of deliberate hostility and endurance.
As the album unfolded, massive riffs and glacial tempos combined with Jeff Hayward’s acidic vocal delivery, expressing anger, frustration, and despair without catharsis or release. Tracks like "Polluted" and "To Serve & Neglect" painted a bleak portrait of social decay and human neglect, while the extended runtimes reinforced the sense of suffocation and inevitability. The closing moments of "Tar" offered not relief, but the grim satisfaction of having endured the full ordeal. This long-awaited 2LP reissue via Throne Records marked the first vinyl pressing since the original release, featuring revamped artwork sourced from the originals and presented in a deluxe gatefold edition. More than a historical artefact, ‘Torso’ remained a brutal listening challenge and a defining document of Grief’s uncompromising extremism.
