Description
'Trinity' captured a deepening of the long-running collaboration between Lawrence English and Stephen Vitiello, expanding their shared language through the deliberate presence of a third voice on each piece. Rather than treating collaboration as ornamentation, the album was built around it, with each track shaped by a different artist working at the edges of sound, improvisation, and composition. The result was a record rooted in patience and restraint, yet constantly opening outward into unfamiliar terrain.
Across five extended pieces, English and Vitiello wove their signature blend of drones, field textures, and spatial detail around contributions from Chris Abrahams, Marina Rosenfeld, Brendan Canty, Aki Onda, and Steve Roden. Piano, turntables, percussion, and electronics were absorbed into a fluid, sculptural environment where sound behaved as material rather than gesture. The music shifted between warmth and unease, hovering in states of suspension where structure emerged slowly, often dissolving just as it became perceptible. Recorded remotely between Australia and the United States, the album reflected the duo’s long-standing fascination with distance, intimacy, and the porous boundary between source and space. The closing collaboration with the late Steve Roden offered a quiet, resonant coda, reinforcing 'Trinity' as a work defined by openness, listening, and shared discovery.
